Jack was six the first time Russell caught him dismantling the wireless, seven when he learned how to put it together again, dramatically improving reception.

"Don't look at me," said Russell. "I haven't a glimmer of mechanical aptitude."

"His linguistic precocity, though," said Holmes. "That's you all over." A moment later, he added, "and the nail-biting."

"The moodiness? Long, sulky silences?"

Holmes chuckled.

"Well, you know what they say," mused Russell. "Art in the blood—"

"Don't," said Holmes, "quote that man in front of the child."

Jack smiled, and headed upstairs. Silver Blaize was airing on the BBC at nine.
